January is the month of sales and if shopping is your favourite sport then Dubai really is the place to go. Shopping is a way of life in the UAE and there is so much choice that we thought we would take a look at some of the best places to spend whilst in Dubai. It wouldn’t be pushing it too far to call Dubai a shopper’s paradise. With this reputation comes an annual festival to Dubai’s favourite pastime, the Dubai Shopping Festival. This little gem has been running every year to 20 years to date and is going from strength to strength. The event last for the entire month of January, starting January 1st and ending February 1st, and it is held across the city. Not only does thing mean really good discounted prices at many stores but the city is also decorated with lights and there are family entertainments in the evenings.
The most famous shopping mall in the UAE, Dubai Mall is more than just a place to purchase and you can happily while away the hours in this palace dedicated to the world of shopping. However, in many ways this mall is as famous for its spectacle as it is for shopping as you can see a huge aquarium in the centre. It is also home to an ice rink and the famous Dubai fountain is just outside where you can take some cooling refreshment and watch the water show. You can also visit the Burj Khalifa here and take in the breathtaking bird’s eye vista of Dubai.
Where shopping is concerned sometimes size really does matter and if you want to visit the biggest mall in the Emirates then this is the one for you. In fact, the Mall of the Emirates is the largest shopping mall outside of the U.S.A. and has a large range of items on offer. Designer goods, clothing stores, jewellery, electronics and traditional wares can be found among the 233,000 square metres of shops. Add to this a cinema, over 90 places to dine and an indoor ski slope and you’ve got a great day out.
Gold as far as the eye can see! Don’t miss this great spot to find gold and jewellery at great prices, but make sure you haggle as this is expected at the souk and if you don’t the price may be a little steep. Even if gold isn’t your thing it’s still worth a visit for the atmosphere and experience of trading in the City of Gold.
This is an essential experience for shoppers in Dubai as the Ibn Battuta is a themed mall that was designed to celebrate the travels of the famous Arabic explorer Ibn Battuta and it is set out into sections that are themed to different locations in the world including Andalusia, Persia and Egypt through the architecture and décor. On top of the international flavour you can find hundreds of shops, around 50 restaurants and a cinema with an IMAX screen.
