Walking Tour Itinerary

UK to Kathmandu via Dubai

Depart the UK on your overnight flight to Kathmandu via Dubai.

Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)

Be met by the tour manager and transferred to the hotel for a welcome dinner and a full briefing on the adventure to come.

  • Dinner
Kathmandu - Lukla (2,642m/8,668ft) - Phakding (2,562m/8,700ft), average 3-4 hours of walking including breaks, covering 8km

After an early breakfast head to Ramechhap airport for a spectacular twenty-minute flight to the mountainous airstrip at Lukla, gateway to the Khumbu/Everest region. Meet the trekking team who will be your guides and porters for the whole journey. The trek starts gently with a descent to the Sherpa settlement of Cheplung, then winds up the valley of Eastern Nepal's highest river, the Dudh Khosi ('Milk River'). Along the way there are memorable views as the trail wends its way through Ghat village before reaching Phakdang and the first overnight lodge. Your first trek should take around 3-4 hours departing from Lukla at 2642m before arriving at your Guest House in Phakding which lies approximately at 2562m. Today's trek is expected to take around 3-4 hours covering ascents and descents of approx. 80m. Distance covered will be approx. 8km.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Phakding - Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,280ft), average 6-7 hours of walking including breaks, covering 10km

This morning begins with a pleasant meander through beautiful pine forests and Sherpa villages, crossing several suspension bridges before reaching Jorsale, the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park. Admire the mighty peak of Thamserku towering above the village before continuing to the powerful confluence of the Bhote and Dudh Khosi Rivers. From here, ascend to the spectacular Tenzing-Hillary suspension bridge and take in the incredible views of Mount Everest rising behind the Nuptse Lhotse Ridge. The trail now steepens for the final climb up to Namche Bazaar, a bustling high-altitude town and gateway to the Himalayas. Unwind and settle in for a two-night lodge stay in Namche.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Namche Bazaar: Acclimatization and exploration day

A day to become acclimatised to the altitude, with plenty to do. Namche Bazaar is a delight in itself, with an abundance of local bakeries, bars, traditional restaurants and souvenir shops. There is also the fascinating and informative Sagarmatha Park Visitor Centre, well worth a visit for an insight into Sherpa culture and regional flora and fauna. Another option, recommended to aid acclimatisation, is a walk to the higher village of Khumjung. The stunning views of Thamserku, Kangtega, Ama Dablam and Everest provide more than ample reward.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Namche Bazaar - Tengboche (3,870m/12,694ft), average 5-6 hours of walking including breaks, covering 8km

Depart Namche Bazaar and make the ascent towards Sansa where the trail forks to the village of Gokyo. Along the way, look out for local Himalayan wildlife, including Nepal's national bird, the Danphe pheasant and Himalayan Tahrs. Cross the Dudh Khosi near Phunki Thenga and pass Tibetan Buddhist water driven prayer wheels. Traditionally it is believed water that passes the prayer wheel becomes blessed and purified, cleansing the onward path. Begin to ascend through the stunning conifer and rhododendron forest which leads to the picturesque village of Tengboche, showcasing an incredible panoramic view of Himalayan peaks. Having reached tonight's destination, spend the afternoon visiting Tengboche Gompa, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery established in the early 20th century by Lama Gulu. This spiritual centre is perched on a ridge at 12,687 ft, with Mount Ama Dablam forming a riveting backdrop.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Tengboche - Dingboche (4,360m/14,300ft), average 5-6 hours of walking including breaks, covering 10km

Today's trek towards Dingboche begins by crisscrossing the Imja Khola River and making a steady ascent up its valley to Pangboche and on to Shomore for a rest and lunch. The trail continues with a climb out of the tree line to a wooden bridge where the icy rapids of the Imja Khola and Khumbu Rivers meet. Cross the bridge and it's a short ascent to the picturesque Sherpa village of Dingboche. From here there are striking views of the peak Ama Dablam, which rises above the local villagers' terraced fields of barley, buckwheat and potatoes. The fields are walled to protect crops from icy winds during the short growing season. Spend the evening at a lodge in Dingboche.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Dingboche - Lobuche (4, 940m/16,207ft), average 5-6 hours of walking including breaks, covering 7km

This morning's trail starts with a picturesque trek out of Dingboche, rewarded by beautiful views of the Taboche and Cholatse summits. Journey through Yak pastures before arriving at the hamlet of Duglha where you will proceed up the terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier to Chukpu Lari. Here there is poignancy in the stone memorials to the Sherpas and climbers who have lost their lives on Everest, mixed with wonder at the breathtaking views of Khumbuste, Lingttren and Pumori peaks on the Nepal-Tibet border. Follow the valley upstream for an hour to an overnight lodge in the hamlet of Lobuche.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Lobuche - Gorak Shep (5,160m/16,930ft) - Everest Base Camp (5,364m/17,594ft), average 8-10 hours of walking including breaks, covering 15km

A long but hugely rewarding day begins with an early start, following an undulating trail along the icy moraine of the Khumbu Glacier to reach Gorak Shep - the last stop before Everest Base Camp. After a rest and lunch refuel, it's time to hit the trail towards the ultimate goal, the highest basecamp in the world and a place of mountaineering legend. During peak climbing season the trail is busy with porters carrying supplies, the ice seracs becoming a riot of colourful tents. This is a time and a place to celebrate, contemplate, take pictures to treasure and share the moment with your fellow travellers. Marvel at the sublime view of the notorious Khumbu Ice Fall, one of the most treacherous sections of an Everest ascent. Gaze from west to east to take in the peaks of Pumori, Lingtren, Khumbutse and Nuptse. Retrace the path back to Gorak Shep for the night.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Gorak Shep - Kala Patthar (5,545m,18,192ft) - Pheriche (4,280m/14,070ft), average 8-10 hours of walking including breaks, covering 15km

Set off early this morning to summit Kala Patthar peak in time to catch the majestic sunrise over Everest, seen here in astonishing close-up. On the horizon can also be seen the summits of Pumori, Lingtren, Khumbutse, Changtse, Lhotse and Nuptse. Head back down to Gorak Shep for breakfast then onwards back to Lobuche. After lunch, continue descending the valley towards tonight's destination of Pheriche.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Pheriche - Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,280 ft), average 8-9 hours of walking including breaks, covering 15km

This morning the trail returns through rhododendron forest on the way back towards Phunki Thengavia via Tengboche. A climb to Sansa will take you to the trail which forked at Gokyo, and then a walk along a broader trail will lead back to Namche Bazaar, the stop for tonight. This is nearly the end of the journey, and a great place to cherish the experience, perhaps shopping for a memento before enjoying a drink in a bar.

  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Namche Bazaar - Lukla (2,642m/8,668ft), average 7-8 hours of walking including breaks covering 18km

After breakfast, depart Namche Bazaar and descend towards the villages of Jorsale and Cheplung. Complete the trek with a final 35-minute ascent to Lukla, where the journey began. Bid farewell to your porters and enjoy a celebratory evening at the overnight lodging near the little airstrip.
